Where to Stay in Rio De Janeiro

There is no dearth of places to stay in Rio, be it the top rung or bottom end. It is advisable to book in advance if you are planning to stay in luxury, deluxe or mid-range hotels, especially during the tourist season, which is essentially during the Carnival. Discounts are possible in the off-season if you negotiate for them, you can also get a good hotel accommodation during the peak tourist season if you plan ahead.

Since Rio de Janeiro is divided into three main zones namely downtown Rio or Centro, South Zone or Zona Sul and Western Zone, hence it is advisable to check where you would prefer to stay and then choose a hotel accordingly.

Downtown Rio in the City Centre is where you will find all the museums, street parties and the popular Scala Nightclub – renowned for its Scala Ball series during the Carnival. If you want to a part of the Carnival yet want to stay away from all the craziness of it then Downtown or Centro is an ideal place for you as it is centrally located and is easily accessible through taxi or Rio Metro. Some of the hotels in the Downtown area are Hotel Pouso Real, Hotel Americano and Lingua Solta Hostel.

The South Zone or Zona Sul is the popular zone for the Carnival and places like Copacabana, Ipanema and Sao Conrad are the well known neighbourhoods in this zone for the Carnival and are situated along the Atlantic coast. In the Copacabana area hotels tend to charge more for rooms with a sea view. The luxury hotels towards the town have an equally good view of the mountains, which just may be to your liking. There are hotels to suit every budget in Copacabana, Ipanema and Sao Conrad. Some of the hotels that you can check out here are Copacabana Palace Hotel, Rio Othon Palace or Leme Othon Palace.

The Western Zone or Zona Ouesta is still a developing zone in the city and the area where you can stay at is Barra da Tijuca. Transamerica Prime Bara is one of the hotels that you can check out when in Barra da Tijuca. Budget hotels are mainly found in the following districts of Rio listed in order of quality - Flamengo/Botafogo, Lapa/Fatima and Saude/Maua. If you head past Barra da Tijuca, you’ll find several self-catering apartments at all price levels.

Youth Hostels and motels are another range of accommodation available. At Barra da Tijuca, you also have the option of two good camping sites.
