2012 King's Cup Elephant Polo
When: 5th - 11th September 2012 (To be Confirmed)
Where: Hua Hin, Thailand
If you have a fascination for a game that is different and borders on being odd, then elephant polo will perhaps interest you. The King’s Cup Elephant Polo takes place in Hua Hin in Thailand and will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. For the last three years the venue had been shifted to Chiang Rai, but this year the event will be returning to the place it originated: Hua Hin.
Elephant Polo is similar to the standard game of Polo but with certain interesting variants - each team is made up of three players. They ride on elephant back and carry a mahout (elephant trainer), they use a two metre long mallet to hit a standard sized polo ball over a pitch that is 100 metres by 60 metres, and if you happen to be a lady playing, you can use two hands to handle the mallet.
The Kings Elephant Polo event attracts teams from all over the world because of its peculiarity and the evenings after the game are a round of cocktail parties and dinners that are very much a part of this sporting event.
