Junkanoo Festival 2012 - 2013
When: December 2012 and January 2013
Where: Nassau, The Bahamas
Junkanoo is when Nassau turns into a one big party. On Boxing Day, 26 Dec and New Year's Day 1 Jan everyone throngs the streets and lose themselves in gay abandonment. Music rents the air, street parades and elaborate floats glide down the streets and people sway to the music and rhythmic beats of the drums. It's a very colourful sight and though Rio has it Carnaval and New Orleans it's Mardi Gras, Junkanoo is a typically Bahamian event. Outlandish costumes and decorative floats are planned months in advance and the event is very much a part of the cultural heritage of the Bahamas. In fact in Nassau, there is even a museum dedicated to the Junkanoo where award winning costumes are on display for posterity. The Junkanoo truly imbibes the spirit of the Bahamian people. So come and be a part of it.
At Junkanoo, 'The rhythm is gonna get you...' That's guaranteed!
