For 10 days in July, Calgary turns into one big Wild West city with people strutting about in their cowboy attire, wearing cowboy boots, donning Stetson hats et al. Dubbed the 'greatest outdoors show on earth', people pour in from all over and this year even Prince William and his Princess are scheduled to put in an appearance at the Stampede!
The Stampede will celebrate its 100th anniversary this year. It was conceptualized way back in 1912 by Guy Weadick, a vaudeville entertainer who believed it was important to preserve old western values. The tradition carried on and a century later today still manages to capture the imagination of thousands of people who come in from far and near to be a part of this event in Calgary.
The event kicks off with a grand parade and the highlight is the Rodeo which attracts ace riders and ropers. A wildwest scene is re-created and there are competitions for saddle bare back riding, barrel racing and steer wrestling amongst others. It's a fun time to be in Calgary with all stops being pulled out to see that all have the time of their life where enjoyment is concerned.
