Unique and Unusual Bars of the World

March 28, 2011

Here is a list of some of the world's most unique and unusual bars, often regarded as being weird and quirky in their own way, but nonetheless offering a great retreat to go drinking after a hard day’s work. A bar is a place to grab a drink or two, where you can let your hair down and bend your elbow. And there are many types of bars - stylish bars, taverns, English pubs, sports bars, dive bars and the quirky bar. So what makes a bar unique ? Well, you’ll get to know once you read through our list of unique and unusual bars of the world. So, here goes:

Beauty Bar, New York City, USA
When you enter this 70's salon lined with bulky hair dryers capped on gossip mongers gabbing through their manicures, don’t mistake it for an aging haunt nearing its sad demise. The Beauty Bar at New York City is where the local crowd of trendy hipsters grooves to an eclectic mix of ol’ skool music. As for ladies cheering hard at the bachelorette parties, there are cheap cocktails to sip, glam mags to read and a bunch of hot new guys to meet.

Where
This perky little bar sits at 231 E 14th St # 1, New York.

Tipple for the Evening
No Kidding. Only at the Beauty Bar you can get your nails done while sipping martini. The $10 Manicure-Martini combo is certainly worth trying.

Check This Out
Don’t miss the notorious comedy nights on Sunday that leaves boozers and sippers gasping hard as they share a hearty laugh.

Clinic, Singapore
Purely eccentric and for some unusually ghastly, the Clinic Bar at Singapore stays true to the idea of a hospital. Only this time it’s not about unpalatable pills and appetite locking prescriptions. Come here and join the frenzy of tipplers who’ll whizz past you in their wheelchairs, invite you for a crazy cocktail and share a sip or two straight out of their drip bags. Yes, drinks come in drip bags as well as syringes and test tubes. As for appetizers, please take a seat in the operation theatre, your snacks will arrive shortly.

Where
The Clinic Bar is located on the River Valley Road, Clarke Quay, Singapore.

Tipple for the Evening
Nothing at this place suggests regular, not even the drinks. Take your pick from an array of oddly named mojitos and margaritas, but do try their signature cocktail ‘sex on a drip’, a concoction of vodka, gin and fruit juices.

Check this Out
If a night at the Clinic takes toll on your energy, lie back on any of the hospital beds beneath the soft surgical lights. For a gastronomic adventure, order the assorted platter which serves some delectable dishes from the eatery.

Baobab Bar, Limpopo Province, South Africa
What brings us to Baobab is the fact that this cozy little tavern is housed in the hollow of a 6000 year old tree with all the makings of a classic British pub- draught beer and darting boards, country music and archaic bar stools. There’s not much room for hundreds in here but these guys can do pretty well with fifty. Beer is serious business and they serve their brews chilled from the tree’s own cellar where punters get to taste some wine as well.

Where
The Baobab Bar can be found at Limpopo District’s Sunland Estate in South Africa.

Tipple for the Evening
Beer. Baobab is known for its draught beer that’s served freshly from the cask. Now that’s something a thirsty traveller wouldn’t miss.

Check this Out
Looks like the Baobab is not just a bar, but a museum of sorts. The woody walls of the Bar have been groomed with some of the possessions left by the native Bushmen, who were the original residents of the tree.

Office Bar, Tokyo
What better way to unwind after a rough day at the office than to have a pint with your fellas at the uh…Office? Except, this is an office with a difference and no one comes here to work, but it may not surprise you if some workaholics take the décor a bit too seriously. The Office Bar has been worked out well with paper desks, files and cabinets to look exactly like your workplace. And it’s only when the jazz music playing in the background sets the mood right that you realize that this is actually a bar!

Where
The Office Bar is on the fifth floor of the Yamazaki Building in Kita Aoyama, Tokyo.

Tipple for the Evening
The Office Bar is loaded with quite a few drinks on its bar list and you may like to try them all along with the local favourite- Sake.

The makers of this bar have taken their brain child a bit too far to mimic an actual office. They added a fax machine and even a photocopier next to the DJ to make it seem more real. It’s not hard to imagine why the Japanese can’t unplug themselves from work.

Red Sea Star Bar, Eilat, Israel
Folks, the creators of this place couldn’t decide between what they liked more- the fabled world of Little Mermaid or Hollywood’s projection of a gangster’s underwater base. As a result they made the Red Sea Star Bar, a hybrid between the two. Submerged a few feet below the sea, this bar has a couple of observatory-like windows for show stealing views, jelly shaped stools for props and marine themed lighting to set the mood. The music has a universal appeal and the food is alright. But that doesn’t really matter as long as you get to have a drink with the fish.

Where
Five meters beneath the Red Sea, near the Meridian Hotel, Eilat, Israel.

Tipple for the Evening
The bar isn’t really known for its drinks so you can pick anything from the regular fare.

Hands down! The views are simply breathtaking and they alone are enough for a reason to visit this place.

Hobbit House, Manila, Philippines
Good things come in small packages. That’s what they say at Hobbit House, touted as the world’s only bar staffed with midgets. Setting aside the fact that the place is a chunk of Tolkien myths (which grabs more than sufficient eyeballs), there’s a country feel to it that makes anybody and almost everybody coming here feel at home. Live on the stage each night is a band of merry music makers strumming folk melodies on guitar and a bunch of fun-loving dwarves asking customers to join them on the floor.

Where
The Hobbit House is situated at the Arquiza Trade Center, Manila, Philippines.

Tipple for the Evening
A Harp Irish Lager or a Flemish Duvel- what’s your pick for the night? With over 150 kinds of beer, beer and only beer, you can go on guzzling as long as you want. For those who keep the brews at bay, there are quite a few mocktails and smoothies to try out.

Check this Out
Without the dwarfed waiters, the Hobbit House would have been just another bar around the neighbourhood. And don’t you judge these guys on their sizes, because the smallest midget is actually a bouncer!

Casa Pocho, Spain
Caution! If you’re too cultured perhaps Casa Pocho may not be the best place for you. But if you decide to step in anyway, here’s a word of advice- shed those inhibitions and gear up for the time of your life. After all, how often do you get to hurl abuses at a bartender for free drinks? Call it outrageous or utterly mischievous, but Casa Pocho bills itself as a humanitarian effort to help boiling heads let off their steam. Humanitarian or not, the place is ideal for a budget conscious tourist who wouldn’t mind offending someone for freebies.

Where
The Casa Pocho is located at Cullera near Valencia in the south of Spain.

Tipple for the Evening
Casa Pocho has no signature drinks to speak of and your safest bet would be to opt for Beer or stick with the usual choice of cocktails.

Check this out
Not all get to chance upon the freebies. Casa Pocho will award you with free drinks only for comments that are not just offensive but also creative. Here’s a handy tip for the first timers- carry a Spanish dictionary of annoying words that boost your reputation in the competition.
