October 04, 2014

America. Movie stars, casinos, Hollywood, Wall Street, New York... we are bombarded with images from across the pond every time we switch on the television or visit the cinema. For sure, there are parts of America which are just like these images and there are parts of America which are just the same as everywhere else. Then there is the other side to the US, the side that isn't portrayed so frequently in popular media but which offers stunning scenery, beautiful sites and the trip of a lifetime. The Grand Canyon.

Famous all over the world thanks to its spectacular size, beauty and landscape, the Grand Canyon is a National Park in Arizona which receives around five million visitors every year. If you would like to join them then you will be setting yourself up for a trip unlike any other - take your camera and make sure you get plenty of photos of the breathtaking scenery. It is worth shopping around to find the best Grand Canyon tours, as there are lots of different types on offer.

If you're travelling by car then you will usually see the Canyon from the South Rim, which is the most accessible part of the park. This section is also open all year round. You will find the Grand Canyon at its most crowded during spring, summer and autumn if you're looking for a quieter time to go then opt for early spring or late autumn. The North Rim of the Canyon is closed between October and May due to heavy snow. The best Grand Canyon tours will usually take a few days and so will include accommodation make sure to book your tour in plenty of time as this is a popular destination and lodgings are booked well in advance.

Touring the Canyon
Hiking is very popular in the Grand Canyon and you would be missing out if you didn't explore the amazing mountainous terrain. Be prepared though, as the temperatures can really soar and plummet equally, so you will need to do your homework to see what type of conditions you will be hiking in. With plenty of preparation and plenty of water, however, you will have a wonderful hike and make some unforgettable memories.

There are lots of helicopter tours across the Canyon, which offer you a completely different perspective of the site, one which you can't gain simply from being on foot. If you're feeling adventurous, you could even book a mule ride, which is usually a two-day round trip. You'll need to book this well in advance and meet certain height, weight and medical criteria.

This vast expanse offers something amazing to every visitor. Whether you love hiking, rafting, cycling, camping or simply soaking up an atmosphere, then the Grand Canyon should be top of your list of places to visit.
