Shopping in Singapore

September 24, 2013

Let’s start with getting the timing right! Any full-blooded shopper with the right instincts for a good bargain would wait for the Great Singapore Sale! With discounts up to 70% and extended hours at the shopping outlets, this much-awaited annual sale in Singapore draws shoppers from far and near.

Orchard Road, a shopper’s paradise
Orchard Road the grand dame of shopping still offers the best experiences with a host of malls lining her way. Ask a Singapore Tourist guide about the history of shopping on Orchard Road and you will be pointed to Tang’s Plaza, established in 1934 by Mr. CK Tang.

Knightbridge located within Grand Park Orchard is a four-storey retail extravaganza displaying flagship stores such as Abercrombie and Fitch and a massive Top Shop in addition to designer boutiques showcasing shoes, watches and various objected art.

The latest feather to Orchard Road’s cap is the ION orchard, a futuristic looking 66,000 square meter mall spread across 8 levels. This is obviously enough space for designer brands to set up their flagship stores; some like Prada and Sephora house their largest stores in Asia here. This mall is not only for designer aficionados; you get your pick of mid street brands, an art and exhibition gallery and a multitude of dining options to choose from!

H & M, 313 Somerset and the distinctively designed Orchard Central are high traffic shopping zone that compete for the shoppers’ attention in the line up of established shopping malls like Takashimaya, Robinsons and Istetan paving the way.

Malls all over the place!
The Marina Bay Area, fast becoming an icon to represent Singapore to the rest of the world is another place of shopping importance. Raffles City Shopping Centre not only offers designer brands but caters to offbeat brands too! Suntec City Mall, a sprawling mall is famous for the Fountain of Wealth, the largest fountain in the world as per the Guinness Book of World Records. A lot of accessible suburban malls with affordable shopping offer a plethora of shops from well-known brands to proprietary businesses selling their unique wares. Vivocity at the Harbourfront is a good stop by before people head off to Sentosa Island’s Integrated Resort.

Ethnic Shopping
Away from the malls and the brands, ethnic shopping has a big presence courtesy the various nationalities that have made Singapore their home. Bugis Street, Arab street, Chinatown and the bustling Little India arecultural microcosms that are a must visit for visitors to complete their shopping experience. At a typical street bazaar you can bargain to your heart’s content and indulge yourself in artifacts, knickknacks, textiles and clothes reflective of the ethnicity it represents. A special mention goes to Mustafa Centre, a 24 hourdepartment store that sells a wide range of goods from electronics jewelry, clothing to foodstuff at extremely reasonable prices.

Singapore’s oldest Flea Market popularly known as the Thieves’ Market is a fun walk through; who knows what second hand treasures you might unearth there!
Holland Village is a favorite of the expat community for its lively music joints , eclectic dining options and pubs. Many a Singapore Travel Guide would recommend this place to visitors as a one-stop jaunt for purchasing souvenirs and enjoying a fun evening watching the hustle bustle around.

To provide the grand Finale, Changi Airport houses a large majority of the popular brands in addition to duty free shopping at competitive prices. So there’s your Singapore Guide to shopping yourself into retail heaven!
