January 25, 2013

To truly witness the rich cultural heritage and experience the luxurious lifestyle once enjoyed by the many Maharajas of India, tourists are increasingly travelling through India aboard one of the many luxury train tours offered across the country. The opulent living of the many rulers of the country especially in area's such as Rajasthan and the Deccan, is almost legendary- and there’s no better way to experience it than by taking a regal ride on a luxury train. Five special trains, each a living monument in itself, wend their way through the top destinations of the country, offering tourists the opportunity to travel in a style that went out with the Maharajas of yore- and see India at the same time.

The Palace on Wheels
Easily Rajasthan’s best-known luxury train, the Palace on Wheels is aptly named: it is furnished in traditional royal Rajput style complete with wall-to-wall carpets, exquisite interiors, a well stocked bar, personalised service and more. The train makes its way from New Delhi Safdarjung station, covering Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur (Ranthambhore National Park), Chittaurgarh, Udaipur Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur and Agra in an eight-day tour between September and April every year. Departures from Delhi are every Wednesday.

Royal Rajasthan on Wheels
Experience the grandeur of the yester years and have it inextricably interwoven with a contemporary style, a journey on the Royal Rajasthan train is that and much more. Partake of royal feasts fit for kings, take in the splendour of the Pink City and the City of Palaces Udaipur, go on a safari in the jungles of Ranthambore, see the sculptures of Khajuraho and view the majestic Taj Mahal. The 8 day itinerary staring in New Delhi gives you the best of north India. Departures are every Sunday from Delhi Safdarjung station and run through October 2012 and March 2013.

The Indian Maharaja
This train is everything a maharaja would want. From plush interiors to fabulous meals and even a spa to relax in, the Indian Maharaja train offers you a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of the erstwhile maharajas. The train has two itineraries one staring every alternate Wednesday from Mumbai and Delhi covering the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, the beautiful city of Udaipur, then on to a wildlife trail in Ranthambore before viewing the grand Taj Mahal and the Pink City of Jaipur. The train operates from October 2012 to April 2013.
