How to Plan the Perfect Weekend Getaway

January 07, 2013

A weekend getaway can be complete fun and very relaxing, but only if you plan it right. And when it comes to planning a weekend getaway with kids, things always seem much more complicated, but they need not be. Packing for the getaway is always one of the most frustrating and exhausting elements, as many tend to over stuff their travel bags and pack way too much. It’s best to travel light. Apart from your essential car insurance (if you are driving), you need to take the following ten important things into consideration to have a memorable and interesting weekend getaway:

Be Stress Free
The point of the weekend getaway is to get away and forget the hustle and bustle of the tiring week before, so getting in the right frame of mind is very important. You need to allow yourself to relax and unwind, hence try and forget all your problems and focus on having fun instead of merely worrying about things that bring your spirits down. Relax by reading light funny books or listening to snappy songs.

Choose the Right Location
Choosing a particular location for your weekend getaway beforehand not only helps you in preparing a good budget, but also helps you in having a focused mindset. Since you are planning only for a weekend getaway, you must choose a place that is not far away from your home. It should be easily accessible and not too much time should be spent on getting there and back. Remember you have on the weekend and you don’t want to waste the better part of it on the road! Search online for the nearest weekend getaway destinations.

Fix a Budget and Stick to it
Fix a budget for the weekend holiday. Be real careful when doing your budgeting so that you do not face unnecessary disappointments or inconveniences. Your budget must include proper planning and in order to avoid overspending, do not budget for such things that you might not need. Ensure that your budget is pocket-friendly — limit it what you can comfortably afford to spend. Once you have your budget set, stick to it and never think of overspending or spending on what you have not budgeted for, unless of course it is a crisis.

Pack Carefully
Do not over pack! If you are going just for the weekend it would be safe to take two sets of clothes and maybe one extra one in case you have an accident and spill some coffee or something on the set you are wearing. Also remember to pack your t-shirts and pajamas that for some inexplicable reason more often than not seem to be forgotten! For younger children, take two outfits per day as kids will be kids and they are bound to get mucky.

Spare Shoes and Slippers
Don’t forget to pack in a pair of extra shoes in addition to the ones you are wearing. While older kids, or for that matter even you may step in puddles, younger kids in strollers might kick a shoe off that would never be seen again. Carrying a spare pair of shoes can do away with the need of finding a replacement pair while on a getaway. Oh and don’t forget to put in a pair of slippers!

Camera, Gadgets and Toys
While most of us today use our Smartphones to capture memories, never underestimate the value of taking along a camera. Using your camera can make storing, organizing and archiving photos a much easier task later. Carry your iPod or an MP3 player, a book or two, frisbees, badminton rackets and shuttlecocks, and a few toys that will come in handy on your trip. Let the kids pack a few favourite playthings in a small backpack and take along with them. If your kids have a pacifier, a blanket or a stuffed toy that goes everywhere with them, or is a must-have for bedtime, then you must ensure that you have that with you. There’s nothing worse than being half way to your destination when your kids realizes his/her favorite friend has been left at home!

Medication and Personal Care Supplies
If you or anyone in your family is on medication, you need to be sure to bring it along. And if you have kids with you, it is always a good idea to pack a pain reliever and thermometer, just in case. A basic first-aid kit with antibacterial ointment, gauze, band-aids and medical tape can also come in handy.
From toothbrushes to hairbrushes, deodorants to lotions, baby wash to diaper cream ensure to pack all that you need to take care of yourself and your children. The additional gear, like strollers, portable cribs and booster seats will depend on the needs and age of your children. Depending on where you are going and how you are getting there, it will be a lot easier to purchase perishables, like diapers and baby food, and borrow larger items like cribs when you reach your weekend destination.

Snacks and Drinks
Half the fun of the journey is in the eating! Pack sufficient bottled water, fruit juice cartons and a bunch of nonperishable snacks for the car ride. Don’t forget to carry your children’s favorite food items. It's funny how the kids get so hungry while travelling. Thais is the one time you never have to coax them to eat! Another good idea is to pack some fruits, yogurt, cheese, sandwiches and any other favorites if you have room. Don’t forget drinks and snacks for the adults, too.

When it comes to traveling with children, you should always be over-prepared rather than under prepared. Though today you can most likely find a store to buy just about anything you forget, you do not want to spend your limited quality time going on a scavenger hunt for your kid’s favorite brand of snacks. Be sure to make your checklist and check it twice before heading out for your weekend getaway. And if you have still forgotten something, worry not - you can shop for things on the way!
