Greece~A Country Made for Exploration

July 18, 2013

Greece has long been a hugely popular tourist destination and it’s not hard to see why. With a rich cultural history, gorgeous scenery and plenty of exciting activities to keep visitors busy, Greece should certainly be high on your list of places to visit for your last minute holidays in the near future. With some many fantastic holiday spots to choose from though, you may find it slightly overwhelming to choose where to head for, so here’s a quick rundown of some of the best to give you a helping hand!

Athens
Since the 2004 Olympics, Athens has enjoyed something of a renaissance in terms of its significance as a holiday destination. A major clean-up operation has meant that the streets are cleaner, road systems have been modernised and the metro is much more efficient. You’ll have a chance to step back in time at the Agora marketplace, which was the centre of public life in the days of Socrates and Plato and the birthplace of democracy as we know it now. The famous Acropolis is also a must-see, towering over the city with an imposing though wonderfully decrepit grandeur. The Acropolis restaurant here is also fantastic, offering a great menu range with very reasonable price tags.

Santorini
As one of the larger Greek islands, Santorini has a number of top spots to check out, including Oia. Carved into the surrounding cliff faces, this stunning town filled is with the white houses topped with colourful roofs that are so much a part of the Greek aesthetic. Being here at sunset is a truly magical experience and one well worth waiting for. The capital, Fira is great for anyone looking to learn a little more about the Greek timeline - the Archaeological Museum in particular holds a number of ancient Minoan artefacts. Wandering through the narrow streets you’ll be faced with a number of excellent bars and restaurants where you can while away the afternoons in leisurely bliss.

Peloponnese
Anyone looking for a complete escape from day to day life should consider Peloponnese. This large peninsula is a perfectly mixed bag of scenery, with stunning mountain vistas, vast stretches of forest land and breath-taking beachscapes scattered across the area. Fans of the classics will know it well as the setting for Clytemnestra’s murder of Agamemnon, but there’s a lot more to it than that. With blistering temperatures throughout the summer, this is the perfect place to get lost and enjoy a slower way of life. Spend some time trekking through the natural beauty of the place, exploring the coastal strongholds of the past. There are some superb waterfront eateries to check out here too.
