Family Safari Holidays that are Suitable for Everyone

October 20, 2012

Think of a safari and you probably imagine lions in Africa glimpsed from the back of a Land Rover. In reality the modern-day family safari encompasses every continent with opportunities to spot unusual wildlife in completely natural habitats.

The Traditional African Adventure
Purists will doubtless choose the African experience as the blueprint for a family safari and with so many years experience in catering for the tourist trade, Africa has a head start on most other destinations. The word 'safari' originates from the Swahili word meaning 'a journey' and the vast continent of Africa offers spectacular opportunities to journey across the plains in search of the famous 'Big Five' of lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo. The most popular destinations for spotting these animals are in the Masai Mara in Kenya, the Kruger National Park in South Africa and the Serengeti in Tanzania.

Family safari holidays help to take the strain of taking children on holiday. With small group sizes and tour leaders experienced in keeping children interested and amused, the grownups can relax in the knowledge that their children are safe, which is particularly important where dangerous wild animals are concerned. Any good tour operator will advise you on the best packages suitable for children of a variety of ages, together with information regarding malaria tablets, for example. Although Africa is a hot-spot for malaria there are actually several destinations within the continent where malaria tablets are not required.

Other Safari Destinations
Family holidays in Europe are a cheaper option for those wishing to stay closer to home, but there are a surprising number of safari experiences to be had here. The mountains of Romania are home to the wolf, lynx and chamois goat. If your children are crazy about sea mammals, then head for Portugal as these islands of the Azores are home to a huge variety of whales and dolphins, including the sperm whale, false killer whale and pilot whale. Even as close to home as Scotland there are opportunities to spot rare birds such as the puffin, arctic tern and razorbill.

Heading further afield, if elephants are your child's passion, then consider a family trip to Asia to see the Indian elephant in its natural habitat. For great apes and monkeys, Borneo should be the destination of choice, allowing children to see the work of baby orangutan rehabilitation centres. Combine this with a jungle trek and see the pitcher plant, which actually devours frogs! Along with endless opportunities to spot monkeys, this is one destination that the kids will remember for ever.

South America offers the chance to help with a conservation project for the endangered wild turtles, together with spectacular mountains to climb and perfect sandy beaches to relax on afterwards. Older children would enjoy a trip to the Andes to see Machu Picchu and perhaps some of the native wild llamas.

Whatever animal or bird you and your children are passionate about, there is a holiday option that allows you to see your chosen species in its natural habitat. A safari holiday can help to strengthen the bonds within the family, providing you all with memories and photographs that will last for a lifetime.
