Vietnam History Museum

Vietnam History Museum initially known as The National Museum of Vietnam in Saigon was built in the year 1929. The museum, from 1929 to 1956, was known for the exhibition of artefacts of certain Asian countries. Popularly known as Saigon National Museum from 1956 to 1975, the structure underwent an expansion and was renamed to its present title Vietnam History Museum.

The entire compilation at the museum is put up in two parts. Part one comprises of the art pieces since the birth of the Vietnamese Communist Party to 1930 and some of the prominent art pieces include the primitive period in Vietnam, the birth of King Hung’s Dynasty, the periods of struggle to gain independence (Century1 - 9), Ly Dynasty (Centuries XI - XIII), Tran Dynasty (Century13 - 14), Le Dynasty (Century15 - 17), Tay Son Dynasty (Century18 - early 19), and Nguyen Dynasty (Century19 - mid 20).

Then we gradually approach to Part two that comprises of the pieces related to the Oc Eo culture, the culture of Mekong Delta, Cham art, Ben Nghe – Saigon, the minority groups of South Vietnam. Ancient pottery is also a part of this exquisite collection. The large court outside the museum has war remnants on display. With very little English explanation, the museum is majorly used by the Vietnamese school field trips.
