Cho Quan Church

Cho Quan Church is one of the oldest churches in Ho Chi Minh City and was built by the French. In early 1720s, the church was constructed by Father José Garcia. The church was constructed after receiving the Cho Quan Parish, however, in 1731, when the Chan Lap attacked Saigon; the church was burnt to ground.

Two years after the church was burnt down Father José Garcia constructed this church on a larger area. It was bigger than the previous church with 55 metres in length and 20 metres in width. At that time this was the only church in the Saigon-Cho Lon area and it was upgraded in 1775 by Father Diego. Unfortunately the church was again destroyed in 1782, when Tay Son Dynasty and the Lord Nguyen were at war. After the war, with the help of Lord Nguyen Anh, the church was rebuilt in 1793. However the troubles for this church did not end there.

The church was again destroyed during the revolt of Le Van Khoi. The ban on Catholics was imposed by the kings of Minh Mang, Thieu Tri and Tu Duc. A new church was built by Father Nicolas Ham during the year between 1882 and 1885. This church exists till now. Construction of this church continued in 1887-1897.

The major upgrading of this church took place in 1926. Since then small repairs have been done to keep the church in perfect condition. Jesus on the altar of this church has a neon aura. Another reason to visit this church is the view from the tower.
