The International Eisteddfod, a music and dance festival with elements of folk as well as classical traditions attracts high-quality competitors from all nine provinces and entries from as many as 30 other countries. The event lasts about 10 days and takes place in September in Roodepoort near Johannesburg.
Soweto Day, marks the student uprisings that eventually led to liberation and is celebrated as Youth Day (16 June) in post-apartheid times.
The National Arts Festival is held in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape each July. It includes mainstream art, opera and theatre and fringe and student components, including theatre performed in many of the languages spoken in South Africa, film and cabaret. The festival attracts over 50,000 visitors annually.
The Arts Alive Festival held in Johannesburg in September and October is a time for excellent music, even apart from the official programme.
Pretoria hosts the Jacaranda Festival during the third week of October when the trees are in full bloom and the very popular Pretoria Show during the third week of August.
