Economy
Economic prospects in South Africa are bright. The inflation rate is down, the growth rate up. Classified as a middle-income country, South Africa has a gross GDP at USD 277 Billion and a per capita GDP of about US$ 5,684. It has a vibrant financial sector with about 40 private banks operating in the country, including some of the world's top names in banking. However, the task of economic reconstruction remains a challenging one in South Africa after an era of economic sanctions and isolation.

Currency
The South African currency is the rand, (R) which equals 100 cents. The black market does not exist. Major international credit cards are accepted. However this may be restricted to small towns and country areas and some retail shops. Automatic teller machines (ATMs) are situated outside most banks in towns and cities and operate 24 hours a day.
Most major commercial banks offer foreign exchange services. Most credit cards like American Express, Visa and MasterCard are accepted in the bigger cities.
