Options for places to stay have increased considerably in the aftermath of the collapse of the USSR. Restrictions on travel have eased as have those on interaction between foreigners and Russians. With more travellers heading to Russian cities, good quality accommodation has become a necessity. The increase in demand is met by international hotel chains with their luxury and deluxe range hotels, mid range hotels in boring buildings of the Soviet era, Bed & Breakfast places, home stays, lodges, campsites, and hostels for students and backpackers.
