What to Pack
The climate in Russia is erratic - rain, fierce sunshine and cold wind sometimes go hand in hand. It is therefore important to dress adequately in order to protect oneself from the elements. So top of the list has to be clothes - pack keeping the general weather conditions at the time of the visit uppermost in mind. Light rain protection gear and windbreakers should be a definite, good quality trainers for walking in, sun protection creams and other items necessitated by the weather. Pharmacies in Russia offer a little choice in medicines, so pack in a well stocked fist aid kit with basic medication and adequate supplies of prescription medicines.

Travel Documents
All travellers bound for the Russian Federation need a valid passport. Travellers from some member countries of the CIS, Cuba and some of the former iron curtain countries do not need visas (certain conditions apply, so check with the Russian Consulate).
Passport holders of all other countries need a visa. Visas are issued in three categories - tourist, business or transit and can be single entry or multiple entry. The validity and duration of the visa depends on the purpose of the visit - tourist visas are issued for 30 days while business for 90 days. Transit visas are only valid for 3 days.
Applicants for business visas need to submit alongwith the usual documents, either a letter of introduction or an official invitation and also submit details of purpose of visit, itinerary, duration of visit and departure date. Private visas also need to have a letter of invitation from a friend/family member.
Once in Russia, submit documentation to tour operators, hotels or check the procedure with the Consulate if on a private visit. Private visitors also must register with local police on arrival. An exit permit is required by all travellers prior to departure and can be obtained from the hotel or the sponsor. Give it a couple of days at least -so start the processing ahead of departure date.
IMPORTANT! Visitors must carry always carry some form of identification and passport and visa on their person for the duration of their stay in the Russian Federation. Instead of the originals, carry photocopies of passport and visa and also keep a few spare copies handy.
