Norway, with its wide-open spaces and mile upon mile of vast, unexplored territory, is perfect for outdoor activity. The most popular winter sport is skiing , with lots of cross-country ski runs and resorts with downhill runs as well (Lillehammer, which hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics, is probably the best known). Summer skiing is also possible in some areas, mainly on glaciers and in the mountains. Dog-sledding is popular in northern parts of the country, near and in the tundra belt.
Winter sports, however, are not the only activity in Norway; trekking (even glacier trekking!), and mountain climbing - particularly in the Åldalsnes- are among the other sports that are popular. Hiking is a good way of seeing places like the Hardanger Plateau and the Rondane Mountains; and glacier trekking is possible in Nigardsbeen (near Sogndal).
Avid ornithologists can go birdwatching in the Lofoten Islands, and anglers can fish for salmon, trout, cod and mackarel, both offshore and in Norway’s many streams and rivers.
