When you are tired of the city lights of Amsterdam head for a break to the peaceful countryside in the direction of Edam, it is home to the famed cheese of the same name. The town of Edam is just a 30 minute bus ride away from Amsterdam and still has some places where the cheese is handmade and you are free to sample the product.
A little away, is a large windmill and if you have always nursed a secret desire to climb to the top of one, you can fulfill that dream right here, as for a small fee you can climb to the top while it is still rotating!
There is the church of St. Nicholas here and is worth a visit if only to view the beautiful stain glassed windows. Lining the streets of Edam are the proverbial gabled cottages and people who actually walk around in wooden clogs. To get around Edam you can either hire a bike or use the local bus. Of course if you have your own car that’s the best way to take in the countryside.
