There are several excellent archaeological excursions into the ruins of Cancun, notably Chichen Itza and the Tulum Corridor.
Chichen Itza was a Toltec-Mayan city that was powerful from the sixth to tenth century. The Tulum corridor is a veritable treasurehouse of ancient Mayan mysteries that you simply must explore. A day tout is packed but sufficient to ramble through Tulum. You can also make stops at Crococun, a reptile breeding center, the Dr Alfredo Barrera Marin Botanical Gardens, Punta Bete, Xcaret and the town of Playa Del Carmen. Merida is another Indian/colonial town that is a pleasurable destination.
