Historically Speaking
Acapulco was originally a small Indian village, before the Spanish settlers developed it as a seaport. The seaport of Acapulco was the hub of international trade as long back as the 16th century. Silver from Mexico was traded for the enormous wealth of Asia - spices, silks, ivory, porcelain and gems. Spanish galleons laden with these treasures sailed through Acapulco for the Philippines, where the trading took place. The fleets of ships would return to Acapulco staggering under their vast bounty. The merchandise would then be carried inland to Veracruz, from where it was eventually shipped to Europe to line the Spanish coffers.
The Spaniards built Acapulco’s famous San Diego Fort as a sentinel-post to guard the galleons from plundering pirates. The fort was rebuilt in the 1780s after an earthquake.
When Spain withdrew from Mexico in the early 1800s, Acapulco remained in the background for about a century. The city came into the trade limelight once again with improved road and air services
