Mayotte

People & Language

French is the official language of Mayotte.

Ever since Mayotte decided to remain under French control, there was a large influx of people from the other islands of the Comoros, and so a large number of the local population is Comorian. Most of the natives live in the villages and small towns like Mamoudzou, Dzoudzi, Chingoni and Pamanzi Be.

Religion

98% of the population is Muslim. There are also a small number of Roman Catholics on the Island.

Food

The local cuisine of Mayotte is a blend of Indian, African and Arabic and, of course, French. A meal wouldn’t be complete without spices like cardamom, coriander, cloves, nutmegs and cinnamon that are added to daily menus of meat and rice eaten by the local populace. A lot of seafood is cooked the French way. The cheap local produce of vegetables makes Mayotte something of a gourmet heaven.

Culture & Crafts

The only way the natives of Mayotte express themselves is through music and dance. Dances like the Mougodro, a circular dance where everyone joins in, and the prenuptial dance, Wadaha, predominate among the cultural and religious events. Another fascinating custom is what the locals do after a daughter is born into a family. They start to build a house for her while she is still a baby and complete it when she gets older and is ready for marriage.
