Economy
Not surprisingly, tourism dominates the Mauritian economy, which is prosperous by most standards, especially African. It has an impressive annual growth rate of 5.2%, and relatively low inflation. The main industries, apart from tourism, are the ones introduced by the Dutch, French and English—sugar, tea, tobacco and textiles. Sugarcane is widely grown and accounts for 15% of Mauritius ‘ export earnings. Mauritius trades with major international players—the EU, Japan, USA, South Africa and France. Local entrepreneurship in the villages is dominated by Mauritians of Chinese descent, while national level economic policies under the conservative Labour Party have favoured big trading partners like France and South Africa as against weaker African neighbours.
In recent years Mauritius has gone into the communication and information technology sectors in a big way. Mauritius attracts a colossal amount of offshore companies that are registered here.

Currency
Currency - Mauritian Rupee which equals 100 cents.
Money can be changed at authorized money changers located at the airport or in the towns. Major Credit cards are accepted at hotels and bigger shops.
Costs - Mauritius remains one of the most affordable destinations in Africa, despite efforts by some government authorities to give it a decidedly upmarket, swanky image. The wide availability of budget accommodation does not mean that one cannot avail of some world-class luxury in its hotels and restaurants. There is a wide range of options available, so whatever your need/budget, you are likely to find it here. Bargaining is a way of life in Mauritius, so do brush up your skills.
