Langkawi with its capital at Kuah is situated in the state of Kedah, and actually consists not of one, but all of 104 islands, stretching out over 362 sq km. The largest of these islands is Langkawi; only three of the other islands are inhabited, and of these Langkawi is the only one with a sizeable population, mainly of Malay origin.
Langkawi is a beautiful island- beaches, natural lakes, and tall, dense tropical rainforests. Furthermore, almost every place on the island of Langkawi has some sort of legend attached to it. Folklore, myth and legend are such an intrinsic part of Langkawi that it has even been called the `Island of Legends’.
|
The name “Langkawi” means “Strong Eagle” and legend has it that it was the final resting place of Garuda, a large mythical bird like creature that appears in both Hindu and Buddhist mythology.
