Petra

History

The historical city of Petra is located between the Red Sea and the Dead Sea in Jordan. Hidden behind the rugged mountains, Petra is the rock carved ancient site in Jordan which even after reformations stands dauntingly. Called as the ‘one of the Seven Wonders of the World’, Petra is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. With its different and unusual rock colours and stone structures, Petra takes to the mystical world of beauty.

The majestic Petra was discovered by the Nabataeans (Arab people living in Jordan more than 2000 years ago). The site is adored for its amazing architectural skills and rich culture. The site flourished for over 400 years at the time of Rome and Christ and today it boasts over 800 colossal structures- tombs, baths, temples, altars, houses, halls and gateways. All the bulidings were carved out of sandstone by genius arists. Petra’s well known monument is Al- Khazneh, the Treasury and is intricately carved with stones and it shines brightly in the sun. The 30 m wide and 43 m high facade is lovely to look at.

No doubt Petra is the most valuable treasure of Jordan.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Jordan is spring and autumn. This way, you avoid the hot summers and freezing winters. It rains between November and March in the north and is nasty weather for a visit, though you could go to Aqaba, on the Red Sea, which is a warm and sunny winter resort.

Trivia

Petra has many names- the Lost City of Stone, a Rose Red City half as old as time, Treasure if the Ancient World and the Historical City. Call it what you want! The town is carved out of sandstone desert cliffs and the rocks here are of unusual colours.

Timing

Early mornings and late afternoons are the best time to visit the city of Petra. The multicoloured stones are warmed by the sun and shine brightly!
