Arezzo, 50 kilometers from Florence is one of the earliest and most important Etruscan settlements.

Specialities include the bistecca alla Fiorentina (a great juicy steak), ribolitta (a black cabbage and bean stew), minestra di fagioli (a soup with the heady flavour of garlic) and gelato (yes, we owe ice cream to this part of the world).

Florence’s most important event, the Scoppio del Carro, is in March-April. Celebrated on Easter Sunday it is an ox and cart procession, which culminates in a spectacular fireworks display when the entire cart explodes near the Duomo.
