Sneak Preview

Yogyakarta is in Java, and is believed by many to be the perfect embodiment of Java and all that is Javanese. It's in Yogyakarta that the culture of Java has been best and most completely preserved. This is where heritage of the temples, tradition and the culture of the Javanese people are well preserved even today.

Historically Speaking

Yogyakarta was established by Prince Mangkubumi, who returned to Mataram in 1755 and built the kraton (palace) of Yogyakarta. He adopted the title of sultan and went on to build the most powerful Javanese state since the 17th century.

Yogyakarta was the epicenter of Prince Diponegoro’s Java war (1825-30) and was the capital of the republic from 1946 up until the independence in 1949.

When the Dutch annexed Yogyakarta in 1948 the sultan locked himself up in his palace and let the rebels use it as their headquarters. The Dutch didn’t dare to touch the sultan out of fear of instigating the wrath of the Javanese people. Because of the sultans support to the cause of the rebels, Yogyakarta was given the status of a special region when it finally gained independence.
