What to Pack
When packing your bags, remember that Indonesia’s a hot, humid country so the best sort of clothing is light cotton stuff, which keeps you cool. Don’t go overboard with the light and skimpy stuff, though- scantily clad people, male or female- receive a lot of disapproving looks. Keep the bikinis, shorts and tank tops only for the beach. Carry along sunscreen creams, suntan lotion, a big hat and insect repellant so you don’t get sun burnt or bitten by mosquitoes (malaria is a very real health hazard). Carry along essential and prescribed medication and a spare pair of spectacles.
As far as items for personal use are concerned- like medicines and toiletries- most are available in large cities like Jakarta, but don’t expect all the Western brands to be on sale. If you use anything out of the ordinary, bring it along with you. And if you’re planning to go off into the wilds and the villages, take along everything you’ll likely to need.

Travel Documents
Indonesia automatically issues non-extendable visas, valid for two months, to the lucky citizens of a few countries, including UK, USA, most of the Middle East, Western Europe and South East Asia; before applying for a visa check up from the nearest Indonesian embassy whether you require one or not. Even if you don’t need to get a visa, you’ll still need to have a passport valid for six months, and tickets to show your passage out of the country. If you’ve been invited for an official conference in Indonesia, you don’t need a visa, either.
Please remember that the visa issued by the authorities isn’t extendible: at the end of two months you must get out of the country.
