How to get there by Air
Indonesia’s main international airport is Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Jakarta. It’s the main point of entry for much of the country, but other airports also cater to international airlines. These include Ngurah Rai (Bali) and Polonia (Medan, in north Sumatra), which are connected by air to destinations in most major cities of the world. The national carrier is the main airline linking the country to other destinations, but some other airlines also fly to Indonesia to Manado, Biak, Amban, Surabaya and Batam.

How to get there by Sea
Semarang, Jakarta, Bali, Pontianak, Tanjung Pinang, Kupang and Balikpapan are seaports for entry to the country. A number of cruise liners on the South-East Asia circuit make at least one of these a port of call.

Getting Around
By Air:
The easiest way of getting around Indonesia, considering the fact that the country’s basically one island after another- is by air. Fortunately, the country has a good network of airlines that fly to more than 125 cities across Indonesia.
By Waterways:
For getting from one island to another, you can also try going by sea- there are regular ferries which go island-hopping, and the state-owned shipping company, PELNI, services all the main ports. Even though a lot of their work is related to cargo shipping, they do carry passengers too.
By Land:
Within islands, the two main ways to get around is by trains (there’s a particularly good network in Java and Sumatra), or by bus. If you want to set off on your own, you can always opt for a hired car- there are car-rentals in nearly all the main cities, and once you’ve got all the necessary paperwork done, it’s a good way of doing your own thing.
