Like other hill resorts in north India, places around Lansdowne have many temples and shrines, most of them devoted to the various forms of the Mother Goddess.
Visit Jwalpa Devi, 47 kms from Lansdowne on the Pauri-Kotdwar road attracts a lot of pigrims every year, offering prayers and making wishes. The other one is Durga Devi temple (24 kms from Lansdowne) that is highly revered by the locals. This cave temple is situated on the bank of the river Khoh.
The Tarkeshwar Mahadev (30 kms) with its special Shivlinga is one of the oldest Sidhpeeths in India. Karnva Ashram, 14 kms away, is another well known land mark, where Shakuntala is said to have given birth to Raja Bharat, the forefather of the nation. The poet Kalidasa in his epic, Shakuntalam, has immortalized the story of Shakuntala and Dushyant.
