Uttar Pradesh is in the heart of the Hindu belt albeit with a number of different religious communities adding variety and colour. The state celebrates all Hindu festivals like Holi, Diwali, Dussehra with great abandon and gusto. Visitors to the state are captivated by the colourful Holi celebrations in Mathura (March), by the sparkling glitter of Diwali night in Ayodhya (October/November), the ten day long Dussehra celebrations in Allahabad (October) and the Id and Mohurrum processions in Lucknow. The different communities celebrate as many as 40 festivals with complete communal harmony.
Uttar Pradesh is certainly a contender for the title of the state that holds the most fairs with approximately 2,250 fairs held every year. The most important ones are the Nauchandi Mela in Meerut, the Kumbh and the Ardh Kumbh fairs held every twelve and six years respectively in Allahabad, and the annual Magh Mela in Allahabad.
