There are some very interesting places nearby that you can visit.
Crocodile Bank 15 kms from Mamallapuram is naturalist Rom Whittaker’s conservation and breeding centre for crocs and alligators. Established with the aim of protecting endangered reptiles approximately 5,000 species are kept in their natural habitat, in open pools and can be seen from a safe distance.
Covelong & Muttukadu 19 km and 21 km from Mamallapuram are great getaways. Covelong has some interesting places to see including an old ruined fort, a Durgah and a Catholic Church. Muttukadu has beaches with facilities for water sports and some great picnic spots.
Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is 60 from Mamallapuram is one of the oldest bird sanctuaries in India. Several species of birds can be found here, water birds that breed in marshes, water bodies and trees. The best time to visit is in the winter birds when migratory birds are found here in abundance.
Kanchipuram is a popular silk and temple town only 66 km from Mamallapuram. It attracts silk connoisseurs, temple buffs and the simply curious in droves.
Pondicherry is approximately 100 km from Mamallapuram. This former French colony retains plenty of French flavour! Kepis, cathedrals, croissants et al. The Aurobindo Ashram is at Auroville, on the outskirts of Pondicherry.
