Languages of Maharashtra

Marathi is the official language of the state. The other languages spoken in the state are Hindi and English. The cosmopolitan culture of the place promotes English and Hindi as effective languages for communication. You will also find a number of people speaking Gujarati, Konkani, Urdu and a medley of South Indian languages.

There are number of dialects spoken in Maharashtra. In the north-western part of the state, people speak Ahirani dialect. In the southern part of the state, there are people speaking Malvani, which is a dialect of Konkani. Warli, Kankon and Dangi are the other sub-dialects of Konkani. Deshi, Varhadi, Samavedi, Wadvali and Ahirani are the other dialects spoken in the state.
