Kozhikode, also known as Calicut, was dubbed as the 'City of Spices'. In the 14th century Kozhikode was actually planned according to traditional Hindu city building guidelines. Modelled on the image of cosmic man with a meticulous grid system, little evidence remains that someone actually opened his books to design this city, let alone put anything down in blue ink!

Legend says that three Arab princes had placed three jars of pickle with a gold coin in each on the west coast. Only in Kozhikode the coin was found intact in the jar upon the return of the princes, earning it the title of the ‘harbour of honesty’.
