Sightseeing in Karnataka

Karnataka’s best places to visit are basically quite neatly distributed between the northern and southern extremes of the state. Up north are perhaps the real sightseeing options in Karnataka. Fine rock cut temples and fabulous stone sculpted buildings that date back centuries to the days of Chalukyan rule. Aihole, Badami and Pattadakal were at various times Chalukyan capitals.

In the south lies the snazzy capital Bangalore, the atmospheric and redolent city of Mysore, Srirangapatnam – where Tipu Sultan lost a heroic battle to the British, Sravanabelagola and the colossal Mahavir statue, and more.

The wildlife sanctuaries of Nagarhole and Bandipur, where some of the best eco-tourism resorts in the country are, are at the border with Kerala. Beautiful coffee clad hills make up the Coorg (or Kodagu) Hills, which are situated just a little north of Nagarhole National Park.

Halebid and Belur, once Hoysala capitals and centres of activity – now silent testaments to the passage of time, are connected via the railhead town of Hassan.

The activity and political importance has faded out but the charm of lingering glory refuses to die. In the same league is the spellbinding town of Hampi. The main communication link to the north is Hospet. Other places to visit here are Bijapur and Bidar.

Belgaum is a good sightseeing place in Karnataka to gather your travel resources being quite an important city. Along the coast lie the city of Mangalore, the temple town of Udupi and the sun-sand sleepy beaches of Gokarna.
