Languages of Karnataka

There are many languages in Karnataka but Kannada is the official language of the state. Kannada is an old language and is from the Dravidian family. It is also the local language of Karnataka and is spoken by almost 70 percent of the population.

The other major languages spoken in the state are Urdu, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam, Tulu and Hindi. Languages such as Tulu, Konkani and Kodava Takk are spoken by a handful of people. These languages use Kannada script for writing.

Apart from Kannada, people also speak in English for official purposes. With the spread of higher education, the percentage of people speaking English has increased substantially. If you are visiting Karnataka to explore the place, you will come across tourist guides who speak English as well as local languages.
