Festivals and Events in Karnataka

Ugadi, Kali Poldu, Mysore Dasara, Kambala, Banashankari Devi Fair, Sri Vithappa Fair, Yellamma Devi Fair are some of the prominent festivals in Karnataka that are celebrated with lots of enthusiasm.

Ugadi is celebrated in the month of March-April that marks the beginning of the Kannada New Year. People celebrate this festival with lots of enthusiasm, as they buy new clothes, decorate their houses and make a special delicacy called the "Ugadi Pachchadi".

In the first week of September, the Kail Poldu festival is celebrated by the Kodavas – the warrior tribe of the state. The festival is dedicated to their weaponry and the tribes honour their weapons by bathing, polishing and sharpening them to their shining glory.

In the month of September/October, the Mysore Dasara, a ten-day festival is celebrated. The festival is held to celebrate the victory of the Goddess Chamundeshwari over demon king Mahishasur. The festival is celebrated in Mysore. Various cultural programmes are organised over the period of ten days and on the tenth day a procession is organised, which starts from Mysore palace and ends at the Banni Mantap.

The Kambala festival is held from November to February. Buffalo race – a rural sport is a major attraction of this festival, as thousands of people gather to enjoy the interesting race.

Banashankari Devi Fair is held in January, Sri Vithappa Fair is held in September-October and Yellamma Devi Fair is held in November-December are some of the fairs in Karnataka that are celebrated with great enthusiasm.
