Omkareshwar Shiva Temple

History

Omkareshwar Shiva Temple is located at a distance of one kilometer from Madikeri. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was built by Lingarajendra in 1820 and is crafted in Islamic and Gothic style of architecture. According to the legend, Lingarajendra killed an honest and pious Brahmin to fulfill his political ambition. Due to this he got Brahma Hatya Dosha and had nightmares. Later, Lingarajendra was advised to build a temple to come out of this Dosha. He then made Omkareshwar temple and started performing daily rituals. Shivlinga in Omkareshwar is considered to be one of the most sacred and it is believed that praying to this Shivilinga will help devotee get rid of all sins.

The bars of the windows of the temple are made from Panchaloha and an alphabet lim has been placed in between the bars. The temple has huge tank in front which attracts lots of tourists from across the country. The temple has beautifully made footpath which leads to Mandap.

The best time to visit Omkareshwar Shiv Temple is between the months of October to March.

The Shivlinga inside the temple is said to have been brought from Kashi.
