History of Jammu

According to popular legend, the ancient king Jambu Lochan established the city of Jambupura near the Bahu fort on the banks of the river Tawi. The seat of the Hindu Dogra rulers, Jammu attained its position of glory during the rule of Maharaja Gulab Singh (mid-19th century). Amongst other important palaces and temples, the Maharaja started construction of the grand Raghunath temple complex. Completed by his son Ranbir Singh, it is one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in India. The winter capital of the state shifts to Jammu between November and April.
