Eating Out in Old Delhi

Delhi is a food lover’s paradise and Old Delhi just proves this point with its numerous and variety of street food joints to a variety of high end restaurants catering to every taste bud of the world. However, if one is in Old Delhi then one must indulge in the variety of street food available.

Your visit to the Old Delhi is incomplete if you didn’t venture into the lanes of Gali Paranthe wali. Satisfy your hunger pangs with these scrumptious paranthas made in pure ghee and served with variety of accompaniments like sweet tamarind chutney, mint chutney, mixed vegetable pickle, paneer and potato curry, potato and fenugreek curry and a sautéed mash of sweet pumpkin. The food is strictly vegetarian with no use of onions and garlic and yet the varieties of parantha are galore with interesting fillings like cashew nuts, almonds, and peas. One can go for mix vegetable parantha or the Rabri parantha. The cost of the parantha varies according to its stuffing.

If you are not in the mood to have paranthas then fret not as Old Delhi has something for everyone. Want to try some chaat then head to Daulat ki Chaat – another Chandni Chowk speciality. Try the chaat from this eating joint as it chaat is unlike any other chaat you have tasted before. The chaat is essentially a milk froth sprinkled with some crunchy cream called khurchan. Slightly on to the sweet side, Daulat ki Chaat melts in your mouth, leaving you want more.

Even this does not appeal you, worry not! There are still more eating joints and juice shops that will cater to your taste buds. Want to taste some curd and dumplings then head to Natraj’s Dahi Bhalle. With one plate costing Rs 15, one can have a sumptuous meal of seasoned yoghurt with fried dumplings pre-soaked in water to soften them and to drain out the excess oil. In case you do not want to go for Dahi bhalla then one can go for Aloo Tikki which is another speciality of this eating joint. Tikkies are like burger patties that are made with mashed and seasoned potatoes stuffed with either dry fruits or pre-soaked grounded and seasoned pulses. Here the tikkies were stuffed with seasoned green gram and are spicy. So if one has sensitive taste buds please avoid it.

After grabbing some Aloo Tikki it is definitely a time to grab some sweets to balance one’s taste palette. So take the pick either from Old and Famous Jalebiwala and Ghantewala Halwai. Both of them are famous for their brand of eateries and sweets and visit to Chandni Chowk will be incomplete if one does not go to either of them. While Old and Famous Jalebiwala is famous for its hot and delicious jalebis in addition to spicy samosas, Ghantewala Halwai is famous for its Sohanhalwa – a traditional sweet made with dry fruits, sprouts, and sugar.

There is nothing like a cold delicious buttermilk or lassi on a hot summer day for the parch throats, so grab your pick from the varieties of the flavours on the offering at Amritsari Lassi Wala. With the lassi for two costing around Rs 60, one can take their pick from the flavours like kesar lassi, Mango lassi, Malai lassi, Banana lassi, Jeera lassi and Strawberry lassi.

Fine you are a fast food junkie and don’t want to try any of this stuff! Well then head to Kamla Nagar Market and take your pick from the variety of fast food joints there. Want to try some pizza head to Dominos near Kashmiri Gate or Nirula’s, at Bungalow Road, feel like having a burger head to McDonalds again near Kashmiri Gate or Nirula’s. The market is also famous for its momos so if you want to try that then take your pick from being Momo Point and Momo King (next to the Barista and Nike shops).

Ardent coffee lovers can head either to Café Coffee Day in the market or Barista whichever suits your taste buds and can have a chat over your favourite brew.
