How to Reach Old Delhi

How to Reach Old Delhi by Air

The city like the rest of the Delhi is very well interconnected, whether its air travel, road or train travel. Take your pick and enjoy your stay at this living history of Delhi.

The new T3 Terminal caters to all the international and full cost domestic flights. The terminal with its two tier building where the bottom floor is for flights arrival, the top floor caters to the departure. The terminal with its 168 checks-in counters, 78 aerobridges, 30 parking bays, 72 immigration centres and 15 X Ray screening centres, in addition to that numerous duty free shops and fast food outlets, is a travellers delight and receives flights from all over the world as well as other Indian cities and towns.

The airport is very well linked to Old Delhi and the metro link is one of the best and speediest ways to Old Delhi.

The new Metro route links Indira Gandhi International airport to the Dwarka Sector 21 form where one can take another metro bound for Rajeev Chowk. Change here for Old Delhi. The Chandni Chowk metro station is bang opposite the Gali Paranthe wali.

One can also take pre-paid taxis available outside the airport or even the EATS buses that depart from Terminal every half an hour.

How to Reach Old Delhi by Rail

The two major railway stations of Delhi are New Delhi Station close to Connaught Place, and Old Delhi Station in the congested Old Delhi area. Old Delhi station is connected to Connaught Place by buses, taxis or auto rickshaws. Both the stations have overwhelming crowds and unscrupulous touts. Be careful with your baggage.

The quieter Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station in south Delhi gets south-bound trains and the fast trains to Agra, among others. From here it is easy to take either a taxi or auto rickshaw to your destination in Old Delhi.

How to Reach Old Delhi by Bus

The main bus stand is at Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT), close to Old Delhi railway station. All inter-state buses terminate and begin from here. Private buses pull in at the New Delhi Railway Station near Connaught Place.

The Sarai Kale Khan Bus stand adjacent to the Hazrat Nizamuddin Station serves those bus routes headed south out of Delhi city.

Getting Around Old Delhi

Getting around in Old Delhi is not a problem because of the city’s good public transport system. One can hire private chauffeur-driven cars either from travel agencies or car rental companies in the city. Usually the car rental charges depends on the basis of whether the vehicle is needed for half or full day.

Other than cars one can move around Delhi by Metro which connects Old Delhi to Connaught Place as well as to Dwarka which is near the airport. With Gurgaon and Noida also being connected by the metro, getting around in the city has become all the more convenient as the travelling time has been reduced to half and one can avoid the traffic woes that are synonymous with Delhi roads.

Take the tour of the city with the well connected, reasonably priced but the most crowded public transport of the city – buses. The buses ply almost on all the routed in the city and are maintained by Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and some private buses in addition to the Volvos.

In case one does not wish to take either of the above options for their transportations then one can hire auto rickshaws. However, one has to be extra careful with the charges and the routes as the drivers charge exorbitant prices and will take the longer route possible to justify the charges. It is mandatory for the drivers to carry the conversion card but when asked for it the drivers are not able to find it hence it is better to carry a conversion card yourself so that you pay what you think is the right price and leave it at that. Also there are special midnight charges for auto rickshaws which are applicable from 11pm to five in the morning. The charges are 20 percent surcharge for auto rickshaw and 25 percent for tax.

Old Delhi also has a good service of cycle rickshaws as well which is a convenient to travel around the Old Delhi city. With the rickshaw fares fairly cheap in the city the entire trip of Chandni Chowk market is going to cost around Rs 150 for one person and it may go around Rs 400 for four persons.

Although a bit on the expensive side, the yellow and black-metered taxis are more comfortable and easily hired from the numerous stands around the city. Otherwise one can call for radio taxi; one can also go for economy radio taxi.
