Mountains, beaches and blue seas make Greece a great place to indulge in a spot of sporting activity. Trekking, mountain biking and cycling are the perfect way of seeing the countryside at close quarters: all you do is get a good map, strap on the backpack and set off on a tour of discovery. Camping, obviously, is part and parcel of such a trip (although you'd do well to check with authorities beforehand; `rough' camping is not permitted through most of Greece). For the more athletic, mountaineering, rock-climbing and caving or spelunking are exhilarating options.
Along the coasts- and across the many islands of Greece- are opportunities galore for taking advantage of the sun, the sea and the sand. Swimming, waterskiing, windsurfing and scuba diving are just some of the possibilities.
Skiing is not the country's best crowd-puller, but there are a few good slopes where skiing is possible. Of these, Mt Parnassos is easily the best developed; other areas include Mt Pelion, Metsovo and Epirus, along with a clutch of resorts along the Peloponnese.
