How to Get to Bora Bora by Air

To get to the island of Bora Bora, you will have to arrive at the city of Papeete, located on the main island of Tahiti- Nui in French Polynesia itself. The Tahiti- Faa’a International Airport is located in Papeete and all the major airlines fly in directly here.

From the airport one can hop on to a taxi to get to the main port from where visitors can take a boat to Bora Bora. Air Tahiti provides a free shuttle boat transfer between the airport and the village of Vaitape.

There is also a very efficient helicopter service called Polynesia Helicopters. They are the only service which operated between the islands. However this, like everything else, is expensive but is still the best way to directly get to your destination. They operate from the Faa’a International Airport.

By Sea

Apart from the various cruise ships, there are plenty of inter island boats as well from various points. Most operate out of Papeete.

Getting Around Bora Bora

Take an outrigger to get around and explore the islands surrounding Bora Bora. Public transport is limited and consists of one bus which goes around the island. The timings are very irregular.

There is also a Le’ Truck service which runs between the quays of Vaitape and Faanui. But it only runs in conjunction to school and ferry hours. You have to find out the timings beforehand or you could end up waiting for hours for one to arrive.

The best way however is to either rent a car, scooter or bicycle or by walking. Renting a car is comparatively cheaper and they can easily be hired. Hotels also provide this facility.

Scooters and bicycles are a fun way to see the island. The roads are pretty well made for cycling and are an extremely cheap way to see the place. Walking is by far the best way to explore the city. The island is small and you will be able to see even those places where cars and scooters can’t go.
