Dubbed the `Cradle of Finnish Culture’, Turku is one of the oldest cities in the country- and one of its most interesting too. The city was at one time the capital of Finland, but suffered reverses over the years, with a horrendous fire destroying nearly all of Turku in 1827. Since then, a lot of rebuilding and restoration has happened; and the result is a cozy little city- more a town, really- with a warmth which is quite charming, despite the fact that there’s also a lot of hectic activity- in the form of commerce, trade and industry- going on.
For the tourist, Turku or, as the Swedes call it, Åbo offers lots of scope for enjoyment- it’s chockfull of sights. Culturally, Turku is one of Finland’s most `happening’ cities, and the students of the two universities in town make it one of the liveliest and most vibrant places in Scandinavia. All in all - a must on any itinerary.
