What to Pack

Travellers to Hong Kong usually carry as little as possible – preferring to buy most of what they need in Hong Kong as the city is a shopper’s dream with everything imaginable sold in the different markets and shopping districts ranging from designer to off the rack clothes. But actually what you pack in your luggage depends firstly on the season and weather and secondly on the nature of your visit.

In spring and autumn, bring along light jackets and sweaters; for the summer, short sleeves and other lightweight clothes in natural fabrics and in winter, overcoats, wool suits and extra-warm jackets and sweaters are advisable. Most first-class restaurants and bars prefer customers to dress discreetly and casually dressed visitors may be turned away. A few first-class restaurants have a strict jacket and tie dress code for dinner.

Apart from the intricate matter of what to bring, what to wear and when in Hong Kong, a raincoat/waterproof gear is useful in the typhoon season – though you’ll still get wet. A first aid kit is a good idea, especially for minor ailments that can be self-treated.
