How to get there by Air
In recent years China has become quite well connected, with Hong Kong ofcourse having the most connections to other international airports (in fact, if your itinerary includes Hong Kong, it’s a good idea to land at Hong Kong and start your trip from there). However, don’t imagine that the rest of China is impossible to fly into- you can get flights to the larger Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xiamen.

How to get there by Rail
The option of travelling by train is also available at some points along the Chinese border. The Russian Trans-Siberian Express passes through China, as do trains from Kazakhstan.

How to get there by Road
By road, you can go by bus or hired transport (the latter is less common) from Pakistan- along the Karakoram Highway, and from Nepal (via Tibet). From the east, China can be approached through two border crossings with Vietnam, and also through Laos and Myanmar. Note that there aren’t any crossings open between India and China, due to political tensions.

Getting Around
The only problem with getting around in China is that of time- it’s so huge, you spend a lot of time just getting from Tourist Attraction A to Tourist Attraction B. Fortunately, however, transport networks over most of the country are pretty well developed. You can fly to all the provincial capitals (and some of the other large cities), and trains go almost all over the country, except Tibet. Where trains don’t go, buses do, and are a cheaper, though slower, alternative. However, you should be prepared for a rough ride - roads are often pretty bad. A fourth option is that of the ferries and boats along main rivers like the Yangtse.
Within cities, taxis, auto-rickshaws and hired cars (or bicycles, the most common form of transport) can be used. If you’d like to set off on your own, hiring a car or jeep is a good idea, and sometimes the only way, in places like Tibet.
