How to get there by Air

Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote have the heaviest international traffic including that from Spain. Most European cities have direct connections to these airports. If you are flying in from North America and want to avoid changing flights at Madrid, you could fly to London or Munich and get cheaper fare. Visitors from Australasia have to fly into Madrid or another European capital on their way here. There is a weekly ferry from Cádiz, a southern Spanish port, but you will have to compromise on comfort.

Getting Around

Travelling between islands is possible via planes, bus or ferry. The first is a more expensive but faster alternative. The local airline Binter can transport you to six out of the seven islands (remember one airport is still not completed!!) Or you could use the roll-on-roll-off ferries, hydrofoils or jetfoils. If you have travelled in Latin America you will be able to bear the buses here. Known locally as guaguas , they will get you to most of the main destinations but that is when they run. Each island has its own service but trips aren’t often enough. In islands with bigger populations most people are mobile. Car-rentals are a viable option. Book a car before you arrive if you plan to stay a while, if you decide on the spur of the moment, your enthusiasm could take tumble at the hands of the local sharks and touts. Taxis run, but they’re steep.
