Canada

Economy

Canada has one of the 10 largest economies in the world. It boasts of rich natural resources producing gold, silver, uranium, silver and copper. Major industries include oil, natural gas, coal and hydroelectricity. Major exports are include wheat, wood pulp and forestry products like newsprint. Fur trapping has played an important part in Canada’s early economic development and continues to do so even today.

Currently, USA is the major trading partner. Mexico is on its way to acquiring a similar status. Economic ties are also being established with Japan and China. The inflation rate hovers around 2% and even though Canadians enjoy a high standard of living, income levels have fallen in recent years and unemployment has risen.

Currency

In Canada, the main unit of currency is the Canadian dollar divided into 100 cents. Paper money is available in $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 -the size is the same but the colors and images are different on each denomination. Coins come in one cent or the penny, five-cent or the nickel, 10 cent or dime, 25 cent or quarter, $1 or the loonie and $2 or the twoonie!

Visitors to Canada will find that a major part of their holiday budget will be expended on accommodation: choose wisely from the various options available to minimise this cost. Food is generally not very expensive and one can choose cheaper options like eating in small diners and bistros or from street food vendors instead of fancy restaurants. Buses are the cheapest mode of transport and air travel within the country is expensive. Do remember that the cost of train and plane tickets will come down considerably, if you book in advance.

Banking hours are shorter than retail timings -only a few have evening hours or open on Saturday. Most banks are open from Monday to Thursday from 10 am to 4.30 pm and on Fridays, a little later till 5 or 6 pm. The best place to change your money in Canada is at the various branches of international and local foreign exchange dealers.
