Economy
Agriculture and forestry provides livelihood for 80% of Bhutan’s population. Agriculture is mainly subsistence farming and animal husbandry. The Government of Bhutan earns most of its revenue from selling hydroelectric power to north India. Other sources of revenue include coal, gypsum, cement production and ferro chemicals. The tourism industry is slowly gaining momentum but the government and people want to take it in measured paces. Each economic programme takes into account the country’s strong desire to protect the cultural traditions and natural environs.
Infrastructure and roads are still to develop and Bhutan relies vastly on Indian migrant labour for development projects. Bhutan is one of the least developed of the third world countries but the poor are better off than other countries in a similar status because of the small population.
GDP growth and GDP purchasing power averaged 21.4% and US$3.533 billion respectively in the year 2008. Red tape and uncertain policies in areas like industrial licensing, trade labour and finance continue to hamper foreign investment.

Business Guide
The business community in Bhutan is young and friendly yet traditional and formal. Many of them wear traditional attire and, no matter where you are from, your country’s formal wear is acceptable in this country. Shaking hands is the common form of greeting. The south of Bhutan is warm in summer and a lightweight or tropical suit or a shirt and tie is best worn. In the capital, Thimphu, a business suit and tie are recommended.
