Australia is one place where you'll never have a problem with accommodation or finding places to stay. It's extremely well equipped and offers accommodation for all kinds of travellers, with all kinds of budgets. Accommodation is cheaper in the non - peak season than the peak season. The difference can be as much as 30%. In the wet season, up north in summer (low season for the north), the prices drop drastically.
Hotels:
These can be classified into old hotels and newer international chains. The older ones are usually large, with extravagant buildings and you'll find them in the centre of town. If they aren’t very comfortable, they are charming and reminiscent of the old times. They are the town's social focus, so you can find out about the happenings in town at these hotels.
5 star and resort options offer luxurious surroundings, private beaches and wilderness areas. Accommodation can stretch from powered tent sites to cabanas, cabins, luxury cottages to low-rise apartments. Most have facilities including shopping arcades, cafes, sports and swimming facilities and transportation.
Sleep Alert! For a good nights sleep, don't take the room above the bar – the Aussies play as hard as they work.
Motels, Service Apartments & Holiday Flats:
Motels are convenient for those driving around on a slightly higher budget. You can find loads of them, usually a bit away from the centre of town. Service Apartments and Holiday Flats, usually in the more touristy areas are available on daily or weekly basis. Check out which one suits you, before renting it. They can either be serviced daily or they may require you to bring your own linen and bedclothes and do your own house-work.
Country Accommodation:
If you're out in the country and looking for a place to stay, stop at the next farm and ask if you can stop over. With prices of farm produce on the wane, tourism keeps the economy running, so someone may be willing to rent out a room for a bit. Want to live on a houseboat? The Murray River in Victoria and South Australia has many exciting possibilities.
Hostels:
Youth Hostels offer basic accommodation or dormitories. Non -YHA members are also accommodated. Back-packers hostels have sprouted up all across Australia. Many of them are former motels now hostels. They are usually big and prices per night don’t break the bank. Many hostels hots up the competition, so check for discounts. There are many memberships worth joining, so have a look around before you make a final decision. Guest houses and B&B places are fast growing accommodation segments and offer rooms in everything from miner’s cottages, farmhouses, country homes to renovated barns. An interesting choice of place to stay can add romance to an Aussie vacation.
